PORT OWEN MARINA

BEAUTIFUL JEWEL OF THE WEST COAST

Situated in the Berg River estuary, this man-made marina is ideally positioned to provide a safe marine environment for all kinds of water sport.

Safe access to both the river and the ocean ensures that fishing enthusiasts can virtually spend 24 hours a day on the water trying for their favourite species.

St Helena Bay is recognised as one of the safest open water sailing venues and yachtsmen, whilst enjoying a safe harbour, can access the ocean safely during the entire year.

The Berg River itself provides safe recreational areas for all kinds of activity, ranging from waterskiing, rowing, sailing in small boats as well as superb bird watching from boats.

BRIEF HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT OF PORT OWEN MARINA

The Residential Marina with Yachting Amenities at Port Owen was designed and developed by the property developer Owen Wiggens Trust (Westcoast) and completed during the second half of 1988.

The Developer was responsible for the maintenance and control of the waterways and related infrastructure, but the company experienced financial difficulties and was placed under curatorship during 1994.

The waterways and infrastructure was eventually sold to the Velddrif Municipality for a nominal amount and transfer was effected in July 2000.

The Velddrif Municipality was effectively forced to purchase the development. It had, however, no appetite to manage, maintain and control the marina. The fact that no maintenance was done on the waterways and other infrastructure between 1994 and 2000 called for drastic action.

THE BIRTH OF PORT OWEN MARINA AUTHORITY

The community, led by the Port Owen Property Owners Association, decided, at the time, that the best solution would be to transfer the responsibility of the management and control of the marina to the community of Port Owen. Active local representative organisations were required to provide volunteer representatives to act as directors on the Board of an Article 21 (not – for – profit) company. This Company was incorporated on 18 May 1999 as the Port Owen Marina Association.

The Waterway Action Group (WAG)

POMA is very much a “For the People, By the People” organisation. It is an example of how a community, working with the Municipality, can achieve its collective goal.

The Port Owen development is growing rapidly and is a very important contributor to the Velddrif economy. The Community recognises this and is resolute in its endeavours to safeguard the future of the Marina.
